Doors locked in fear! The gospel today talks about the doors being locked in fear...the fear that if they stood for Jesus...if they believed what was told to them that they would be next. Like the Church doors of Sri Lanka this weekend..."locked in fear" perhaps even the doors of our hearts, "locked in fear." It is the message of peace that brings incredulous hearts strength. The apostles needed affirmation. They had to see Jesus, not just Thomas all of them! They rejoiced at seeing Him. They rejoiced in the mercy he brought to their fearful hearts! They rejoiced as the prodigal son rejoiced in the mercy we still have today every time we go to the Sacrament of Confession. One of the questions I always had was, why did the Lord make Thomas wait a whole week? Why couldn't he just appear to Thomas without the others present? Thomas didn't believe his brothers, he doubted the mercy....the scars are the mercy my friends! The scars our Risen Lord still has! Today we too, can shout with Thomas, "My Lord and my God!" The beautiful gift of His Mercy we celebrate today on this Divine Mercy Sunday should strengthen our faith to know the great message of Easter peace.
